Former volunteer and supporter of 32 years wins £1,000

Helen from Winsford has been playing our Lottery since the very beginning, back in 1994. Fast forward to March 2026, and she got a call with some unexpected news. She’d won £1,000 while out shopping in her local Asda!

“I was in disbelief at first, so much so that I needed to make sure that the call was genuine, so I called in to the Hospice to double check! A nice surprise for sure.”

Helen and her family have long been connected to St Luke’s. She’s volunteered on our In-patient Unit and supported events like the Midnight Walk, building a close relationship with the Hospice over the years.

“My family has a long history with St Luke’s and the Lottery. My dad should have been one of the first patients here when it opened. Unfortunately, he died the Saturday before they could arrange to get him here. Then when the Lottery started in 1994, my mum started playing and I took some numbers as well. When my mum died in 2010, I took over her numbers.”

Through her time helping our nurses on the In-patient Unit, Helen has seen first-hand just how vital Lottery support is in keeping our care going.

“Supporting the Hospice in any way you can is really important. A very small proportion of funding comes from the government, which means the rest must be fundraised. I know how expensive it is to run the Hospice from my experience on In-Care. The number of nurses they have and the care they provide, they need the support from the public to be able to continue to give people the care they deserve.”

By playing our Lottery, you’re helping us continue to provide essential care for those who need it most — and like Helen, you might even get a lovely surprise along the way.
