With a new season and a new school year around the corner, it’s tempting to think about buying a whole new autumn wardrobe for that fresh look. This September, we want you to join us in rethinking that. If you’re someone who usually likes to completely reinvent their wardrobe as the weather changes, think again because this month it’s Second Hand September.
Second Hand September is a 30-day campaign run by Oxfam encouraging people across the UK to stop buying new clothes for the duration of the month for the whole month and at St Luke’s, we’re getting on board with their campaign too by not only encouraging you to shop second-hand throughout September but also asking you to donate your preloved items to us.
Although this might sound easy to some, for many of us it’s harder than we probably think – how often have we all bought something for an event, worn it once or twice, and chucked it in the back of the cupboard never to be seen again?
The fashion industry is one of the most polluting on the planet, with a carbon footprint outweighing that of international flights and shopping combined. Thanks to the rise of fast fashion over the past few years, this has only become more apparent, and every week 11 million items of clothing end up in landfill, according to Oxfam.
Here’s how you can get involved with Second Hand September this month with St Luke’s:
1. Take the pledge
Rather than hitting the high street and buying new, we want you to pledge to live more sustainably by taking on the challenge of buying no new clothes and donating your preloved ones for the whole month. As well as improving your carbon footprint and helping the planet, you will help St Luke’s to provide care and support to people in our area.
2. Declutter your wardrobe
When going through your wardrobe, ask yourself with each item if you will wear it in the next six months to a year. If the answer is no, then you can probably live without it. Once you’ve got a pile of clothes that you’re willing to part ways with, please drop them off at your local St Luke’s charity shop – if you’re a taxpayer, please sign up for Gift Aid!
3. Shop second hand
Pick up pre-loved items, a hidden treasure, or even your next upcycling project across St Luke’s Hospice’s nine shops. The shops are located in Alsager, Northwich, Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach, Winsford and our furniture warehouse is located on Winsford Industrial Estate.
4. Order online
As well as buying second-hand in our shops, you can also shop with us online. We have a fabulous range of items available on our two ebay stores (donated goods and brand new!) You’ll find a variety of clothing, vintage items, giftware and homeware along with some fantastic one-of-a-kind pieces. Our team of volunteers pride themselves on quick delivery and fantastic customer service.
5. Share on social media
Raise awareness of living more sustainably and keep the conversation going all while supporting St Luke’s. If you shop in one of our shops, donate a bag or purchase an item online, please take a photo and tag us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #SecondhandSeptember
We couldn’t provide the specialist care we do without your support.
