Volunteers’ Week 2025 – Delores (Reception)

For most visitors to the Hospice, the reception is their first introduction to St Luke’s. Our team of volunteer receptionists pride themselves on always providing a warm and welcoming environment to anyone coming through our doors.

Whether it’s a family member visiting for the first time or a Nurse clocking in for a shift, all are treated with care and compassion.

Dolores joined our wonderful team of receptionists last year and described her role as giving her a “sense of fulfilment”.

Dolores’ journey with the Hospice began when her sister-in-law Helen started coming to St Luke’s for cancer treatment with the Christie clinics.

She said: “I retired when I was 60 in August 2024 and I was going a bit braindead after being in a career for 35 years. So, when Helen (sister-in-law) was coming in one day to the Hospice, I asked her to get me a job so I can do something useful with my time.”

Helen informed Dolores of the various volunteering opportunities available at the Hospice so she filled in a form to become a volunteer receptionist.

“I find it really rewarding and it’s also very flexible for me. Working on the reception gives you a real insight into how all areas of the Hospice work and I’ve met so many lovely people. “Seeing what St Luke’s does for the community first hand really puts it all in perspective, and because Helen was here, I really appreciated on her behalf what St Luke’s does. “We as a family really appreciate St Luke’s, so this is just me doing my little bit”.

If Dolores isn’t volunteering her time, she’s taking part in the Twilight Walk or playing the St Luke’s Lottery. Her dedication to St Luke’s is so inspiring and we’re proud to have her be part of our reception team.
