Volunteers’ Week 2026 – Olwen & John

Volunteering is a family affair for Olwen and John Lyons!
Between them, the husband and wife team have dedicated an incredible 25 years of volunteering for St Luke’s. They first joined as befrienders before Olwen moved to our Hospice reception team and both began supporting fundraising events like the Twilight Walk and Midnight Walk as volunteer stewards.
Jon loves knowing he can make a difference to the person he befriends, while Olwen enjoys meeting and supporting patients, visitors and staff as one of our friendly volunteer receptionists.
Olwen shares: “I was supported by St Luke’s when I was recovering from breast cancer 18 years ago and, when I retired, I wanted to give something back. I like feeling useful and appreciated — at the end of every shift someone says ‘thank you’ and that means a lot.”
Would they recommend volunteering?
“Yes, without a doubt,” says Olwen. “Give it a try and, if that role isn’t for you, ask to try something else — there are lots of options.”
Thank you, John and Olwen, for the incredible difference you make, and for being such valued members of the St Luke’s volunteer family. 💙
